Román Montoto - NCARB

Senior Project Architect

Román is a licensed architect with a wealth of experience built through a diverse career spanning multiple cities and sectors. After graduating from UW–Milwaukee and beginning his practice in his hometown of Milwaukee, WI, he moved to Chicago, where he contributed to innovative local, regional, national, and international projects—ranging from large-scale developments to bespoke residential and cultural spaces. His career then shifted toward academia, where he taught design studios before accepting a full-time position in the University of Idaho’s Department of Architecture. There, he achieved tenure and promotion to full professor, earning national and international recognition for both his work and that of his students.

Driven by a passion for design discovery through visionary client engagement, Román brings a distinctive blend of exploratory, tectonically vibrant, and rational design processes to Nagel Architects. His recent projects here include facilities for the National Cemeteries in Riverside, CA, and Albuquerque, NM; the VA Fire Station in Helena, MT; and a range of residential, corporate, and commercial developments.  Román is committed to creating impactful, unexpected, and memorable spatial environments that not only meet client goals but also foster an experientially rich, thought-provoking, and enduring future for the built environment.
